Our Unique Educational Methods

Combining Montessori and Reggio Emilia

BITS Prep incorporates both Montessori and Reggio Emilia educational methods creates a rich and dynamic learning environment for all children, including those with developmental and behavioral challenges. Both approaches are inherently flexible, child-centered, and adaptable to individual needs, making them highly effective for diverse learners.

Montessori Method

  • Individualized Learning: Each child progresses at their own pace using hands-on materials.
  • Prepared Environment: Classrooms are designed to encourage independence, exploration, and structure.
  • Practical Life Skills: Emphasizes activities that teach autonomy (e.g., pouring, cleaning, organizing).
  • Intrinsic Motivation: Focuses on fostering a love of learning rather than external rewards.

Reggio Emilia Approach

  • Project-Based Learning: Encourages children to explore topics deeply through projects driven by their interests.
  • Collaboration: Highlights group work and dialogue to foster social skills and teamwork.
  • Creativity and Expression: Uses art, storytelling, and sensory play to allow children to express themselves.
  • Environment as the Third Teacher: Spaces are designed to inspire exploration and interaction.

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”

Blending The Two

Child-Centered Learning

Documentation and Reflection

Child-Centered Learning

BITS Preparatory Academy offer self-paced activities (Montessori) alongside collaborative, project-based experiences (Reggio), allowing students to choose areas of interest, blending individualized goals with group exploration.

Learning Materials

Documentation and Reflection

Child-Centered Learning

We use Montessori tools (e.g., manipulatives for math, sensory trays) alongside Reggio materials (e.g., loose parts, natural elements) for open-ended play and creativity

Environment Design

Documentation and Reflection

Documentation and Reflection

Teachers set up a prepared environment with Montessori materials for practical life skills and sensory activities, and incorporate Reggio-inspired areas with open-ended resources like natural materials, art supplies, and documentation panels that display children’s work.

Documentation and Reflection

Documentation and Reflection

Documentation and Reflection

BITS Prep combines Reggio’s emphasis on documenting learning through photos, journals, and discussions with Montessori’s practice of observation and record-keeping.

Teacher Role

Teachers act as a guide (Montessori) while also being a co-learner and facilitator in group projects (Reggio).

Adaptation for Developmental Disabilities

  • Breaks tasks into smaller, manageable steps with clear instructions.
  • Provides sensory-friendly spaces and activities for regulation.
  • Uses visual supports, adaptive tools, and consistent routines to foster a sense of security.
  • Partners with therapists and special education experts to align learning goals with individualized education plans (IEPs) or behavior plans.

Benefits for Children with Developmental Disabilities

Montessori: The structured and predictable environment helps children with autism, ADHD, or other developmental disabilities thrive. Practical life activities build confidence and independence.

Reggio Emilia: Open-ended exploration supports creativity and emotional expression, which can help children develop social and communication skills in a less rigid format.
